I'm living out my life in a bedroom community watching the seven o'clock news and doing the daily crossword puzzle while my brother eats raw fish and wages a war of resistance against an army of occupation who stole the only home we ever knew. I'm not a fanatic or a saboteur, I tell myself. I'm a good citizen, I tell myself. I have duties and responsibilities, I tell myself. But Luke has proven something to me. I'm not a man of principle, I'm not a man of faith, and I'm not a man of action. I have the soul of a collaborator. A Vichy government has set up headquarters in that soul. I've become exactly the kind of man I hate more than anything in the world. I keep a nice lawn and I've never gotten a speeding ticket.
